Update time: A lot of you have been asking me on instagram, facebook, and twitter for a while now what I've been up to and when the new record is coming. I'm not a huge fan of talking about myself so I'll try and keep this short but 2012 was a very unique year for me - with everything from the biggest haircut of my life and accompanying freakout of my friends... to the total surprise and craziness of having done the music for a number one movie at the box office... to the polar opposite of a short but vexing dry spell of personal songwriting... to everything in between. Truth is, most of 2012 I was holed up like a hermit in the recording studio, emerging only occasionally for coffee or to walk my dog Waylon. I have to say, though, that it was a really productive year as far as recording is concerned and I definitely did end up getting over said songwriting dry spell with good ol' fashion Pittsburgh-style hard work. For the majority of the first half of '012 I was writing and tracking a new album that I'm really proud of with a fantastic group of players (and a few songs by my lonesome) as well as coming up with a nice-sized pile of b-sides and rarities that may or may not see the light of day. I've also been spending a great deal of time on my other and much newer gig composing music for movies - really just learning the ropes of a new trade if you wanna' know the truth. I'll be unveiling a lot more music and news in the near future and I'll probably start tweeting more tidbits and lyrics and details about this new album of mine too so don't be a stranger and you know I'm pretty accessible on the web so holler if you have any questions.
Lastly, I dropped the price of every single item in my online store by a good bit just in case you have any leftover holiday money burning a hole in your pocket. check it out.
Here's to you and your new year! I hope you enjoy the new song and in 2013 I hope you'll always follow your heart and be inspired every day.
with sincere thanks and a high five,

A recent episode of "Supernatural" on the CW Network opened with Brett Detar's "The Devil's Gotta' Earn" (before a brutal murder scene). Apparently I write songs that are the last thing you hear before brutally dying on TV... (click to watch the episode but if you get squeamish over blood don't say I didn't warn ya!)

Alot of folks have been very, very kind to me and my music by helping me spread the word about my free album on their websites and blogs. Here are a few of the latest ones from the last couple days that you should definitely go visit...
First, there's a nice little write up on NineBullets which happens to be one of my favorite music sites. You should definitely check out NineBullets Radio too while you are at it. Autopsy IV plays a ton of great music every thursday night live on the radio dial in Tampa, Florida and you can stream all of the shows online too. Do it.
Second, I just did this interview yesterday so it's fresh outta' my brain. Check out my answers & all kind of other great art, music, and coolness on: StellarExplosion.
The Los Angeles's roots music community sometimes gets a bit overlooked but Turnstyled, Junkpiled is a great website from my tinseltown that's doing their part to make sure LA artists get their due and I think they are doing a fantastic job. I am regular reader. They do cool giveaways and wrote a great article on Gram Parsons belonging to LA that you should check out and they also wrote some mighty kind words about yours truly. Good stuff!
And lastly for today, not that I can read it, but I just got this review in in the Dutch magazine: Rootstime and I am hoping it's good. :)

Dudes & Dudettes,
Here's to you all! I hope you're having a glorious weekend. To my American friends, I hope you've recovered from Thanksgiving and all those extra days off. I've mostly been hard at work writing my next record and I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel on the writing part so good things are around the corner. I'll be telling you more about this future album as things continue. I'll probably be blowing up twitter with ramblings about lyric writing or tracking with the band and such. I'll do my best to give you insight and updates without wearing out my welcome. New record time is one of my favorite times... Also working on more tour plans too so keep your ears to the ground (or just stay with me on facebook). My newly added shows are all listed below.
watch my latest live vid: "EMPTY HOUSE ON A FAMOUS HILL" - in Salt Lake City at The State Room
MY STORE IS OPEN AGAIN WITH ALL NEW & SALE ITEMS!
I had my webstore closed for a few months while I was out on the road because it was too hard to do the shipping and order fulfillment myself while I was out on tour (yes, when you order from my webstore it's me doing all the packing and shipping). A lot of you have been asking when it will be back open... well, search for your holiday gifts no longer because I've opened the store and re-stocked it with 3 new t-shirt designs. I've also added CD's to the store for the first time ever aaaaaand like I'm some kind of regular wal-mart or something, I've put a couple items on 50% OFF SALE! Anything you buy comes with the 4 "Bird In The Tangle" Bonus Tracks too so you can't go wrong. Most of the items were designed by yours truly and they're all high-quality stuff so check it out.

It's your pal Brett Detar here with my latest little news update. I just want to shout out all of the new friends I've made in the past few weeks on tour. It's been rad meeting so many of you and playing for lots of you around the 'States. There are more shows being added regularly (included the ones listed below) and I'm working on taking this show outside of the US too so stay tuned. In the meantime, here's a few live videos I just uploaded that I'd love for you to check out and share.

PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR DIARY
I took a nice little stack of photos while out on the road and compiled them all into a photo album on facebook if you want to see some of the trouble I got into...
And again I HAVE TO say thank you for being super helpful by continuing to spread my free record "Bird In The Tangle" around to your friends and loved ones! Thank you for continuing to post my videos on your blogs & facebook walls and for telling your friends about my record and (of course) for coming out to the shows! Please keep telling your friends to download the record from me for free.
Thanks a bazillion and I'm looking forward to seeing you at a show in the near future.

Hello there friends,
Welcome to my 80% redone website. Hope you like all of the changes. I think it's much easier to read now and there are actual pages instead of the one single page that the site was for months!! Anyways, thanks for coming back just in time for me to leave... yep, I'm about to leave for my very first tour as a solo artist in just a few days. I am quite excited. I'll be playing songs from my new record "Bird In the Tangle" and a few covers too all solo acoustic style and I am hoping to see and hang out with as many of you as humanly possible. Please click here for all of the tour dates!
Thanks again for your continued support. I love you all.
p.s. HUGE gigantic thanks to my good buddy Nicholas who did tons and tons of work to help me re-do this site. He's in two great bands you should all check out The Wildbirds and Hughbob & The Hustle.
The kind folks at Ruta66 Magazine in Spain did a little feature story on me. This one's for all you Spanish speakers.
